In a recent decision reflecting community sentiment, the Elk River City Council unanimously approved a resolution to display the 1983 Minnesota state flag on all city-owned properties. This move comes after a survey indicated that over 75% of the 1,100 residents who responded favored the former flag design.
Mayor John Dietz highlighted the unprecedented level of community engagement on this issue, noting that the city received more responses than on any other topic in recent memory. The resolution, effective immediately, aligns Elk River with other Minnesota cities such as Champlin, Zumbrota, North Branch, Pine Island, Crosslake, and Babbitt, which have also chosen to continue flying the previous state flag design.
The decision underscores Elk River’s commitment to honoring the preferences of its residents and maintaining a connection to the state’s historical symbols.
