Elk River City Council Votes to Display Former Minnesota State Flag

In a recent decision, the Elk River City Council unanimously approved a resolution to display the 1983 version of the Minnesota state flag on all city-owned properties. This move comes after a community survey revealed that over 75% of respondents favored the former flag design.

Mayor John Dietz highlighted the significant community engagement on this issue, noting that the city received more than 1,000 responses, an unprecedented number during his 32-year tenure. The resolution was officially adopted on April 20, 2026.

Elk River joins other Minnesota cities, including Champlin, Zumbrota, North Branch, Detroit Lakes, Pine Island, Crosslake, Babbitt, and Wadena, in opting to display the previous state flag design. Under Minnesota law, the decision to display a state flag is left to each city.

Community members expressed mixed opinions during the council meeting. Some residents supported the move, stating that the new flag design did not represent Minnesota’s values, while others felt that flying the old flag could signal resistance to change and questioned whether it aligned with Elk River’s vision as a welcoming community.

The council’s decision reflects the community’s preference and underscores the importance of local input in municipal decisions.
